Fred Fights Back...kinda-

One day after Creed re-ignited its verbal feud with Fred Durst, the Limp Bizkit frontman has responded, urging the band to "take a hint and spend more time signing autographs than writing about me."

As we previously reported, Creed issued a statement on Wednesday that was sparked by (of all things) a one-year-old phone message that Durst had left for up-and-coming rockers TapRoot. After TapRoot had rebuffed Durst's A&R advances, the Limp centerpiece left an obscenity-rich phone message on TapRoot frontman Steve Richards' answering machine. The message has recently been making the rounds online, where Creed apparently caught wind of it this week and issued a statement denouncing what the band called Fred's "vulgar comments and violent threats... totally indicative of a mobster mentality."

In a statement released to MTV News on Thursday, Durst brushed off Creed's comments, saying, "Creed should take a hint and spend more time signing autographs than writing about me."

Durst also responded to Creed frontman Scott Stapp's open invitation to a charity boxing match, saying, "The boxing match sounds like fun, but I'd rather not resort to violence, since I'm busy doing a free tour."

The flap between the two bands began at KROCK's Dysfunctional Family Picnic in Holmdel, New Jersey last month, when Durst went off on Stapp during Limp's set. "That guy is an egomaniac," Durst told the crowd. "He's a f***ing punk, and he's backstage right now acting like f***ing Michael Jackson. F*** that motherf***er, and f*** you too".

Since then, the bands have traded harsh words, but Durst said Thursday, "So far, Creed has responded to anything other than what I said about them. Obviously, I must be right."

Scott V.S. Fred-

Until now, Creed hasn't felt the need to defend itself against Fred Durst's numerous on-air tirades, believing that his ongoing string of unsolicited negative opinions would eventually ruin any credibility that his band's great music and hard work had earned him.

Having heard his recent comments about Taproot and their manager, after they refused to sign to his Flawless/Interscope label, we feel that Fred has worn out his welcome as an artist spokesperson for our industry. Fred's vulgar comments and violent threats are totally indicative of a mobster mentality that this industry has tried to rid itself of in recent years. If Fred wants to represent our industry as a major label senior vice president, then he should consider actually reading the anger management book that we sent to him or just return to being an artist that lets his music speak for itself.

As for Scott Stapp's challenging Fred Durst to a boxing match, that challenge still stands. Our only request is that it be a paid event with the proceeds being donated to charity. It is our intention to take this negative "he said, she said" situation and turn it into a positive one.

Almost Ready--

Limp Bizkit recently commented on the status of their upcoming new album "Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water", which is planned for a September 19th through Flip/Interscope. Band guitarist Wes Borland weighed in on it stating: "It's done, except for interludes, a little icing on the cake here and there." While drummer John Otto went on to say: "All of the vocals are done, all the music's done. There's some stuff that we're working to just put between things. But other than that, the songs are done. It's just a matter of making sure the mixes are right, and making sure that everything is right."

Fred meets Shawn Fanning-

Limp Bizkit's free, Napster-sponsored "Back To Basics" tour landed in the big, bad apple on Monday, and was once again met by throngs of eager and extraordinarily patient fans.

Despite early predictions of mayhem, the band's first of three nights at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom drew a slew of well-behaved devotees, including the man behind the money for the tour: Napster co-founder Shawn Fanning.

During a chat with Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst and MTV News' Brian McFayden, Fanning admitted that he's not just the sponsor of the tour; he's also a fan.

"Actually I want to try and make it out front, like on the floor, if you can get me in," Fanning joked to Durst before Monday's show.

"I can probably get you in the show," Durst deadpanned. "This is all because of you. You can tell me to shut the f**k up and I'll have to do that."

Limp's "Back To Basics" tour plays New York on Tuesday and Wednesday before heading south to Jacksonville, Florida for a show on Sunday.
